Post 26 – Portraits of Swans

Whenever you visit the River Thames you are more than likely to see swans what ever time of year.  There are believed to be around 22,000 birds occupying the British Isles that nest on our rivers and waterways.  Although there are several species of swan, the majority in the United Kingdom are Mute Swans, so called because unlike most other water birds they make very little noise.

Grace

Serenity

Everything about a swan is serene, gliding majestically on the water or flying like Concorde.

Mother and Young

Male mute swans, (known as cobs) are larger than the female (called Pens) and have a larger bump above their beaks.  Swans normally lay clutches of between three and eight eggs. Here the mother takes her six cygnets for their first swimming lesson.

Gliding through the Water

Swans are notoriously difficult to photograph well.  The brilliant white of the plumage is liable to “Burn-Out” unless you are able to do some nifty Spot Metering and/or Exposure Compensation.

A Pair of Swans

Swans are monogamous and often mate for life,  although divorces do occur particularly after unsuccessful breading.
